9yr-old dies after caning at school
Berita terkini dalam TheStar hari ini
SEREMBAN: A nine-year-old pupil at SRJKC Kg Tiong in Gemas, who was caned in the hands by a female teacher at the school Tuesday, died on Wednesday.According to Negri Sembilan police chief Datuk Osman Salleh, the boy had complained about feeling dizzy after the caning session.
On seeing that his condition had taken a turn for the worse, the school authorities contacted his parents before sending him to the Segamat Hospital for treatment.
“The parents, however, had him transferred to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru but later brought him back home the same day after being told by hospital authorities that chances of their son recovering were slim,” he told reporters after attending a blood donation campaign at the Negri Sembilan police headquarters here Wednesday.
He said it was understood the boy had “central nervous system problems” and dismissed allegations that the caning had caused his death. He added that the boy died at home at 3.30am Wednesday.
Osman said that on a personal note, in future, he advised parents to inform school authorities if their children were suffering any ailment.
“This way the schools will have proper records on the health condition of their charges ... teachers will be extra cautious when taking any disciplinary action against them,” he said. -- Bernama

Nasib baik bapa budak ini berhemah..... if not... jawab-bul-jawablah nampaknya...

Fewer school days
A SCHOOL district in the state of Arizona has decided to shrink the school week from five days to four in an effort to save cash because of the deepening recession and falling enrolment.
The Bisbee Unified School District board voted recently to close schools every Friday for the next two school years. District Superintendent Gail Covington had recommended the shortened school week as a way to save $500,000 (RM1.82mil) each year in the small southeastern Arizona town.
School days would be lengthened by an hour to make up the lost instructional time.
Bisbee Unified had just under 1,000 students during the 2007-2008 school year at four schools: an elementary, middle, junior high and high school. The superintendent has proposed closing the middle school and moving some grades.
Covington said the Friday closures are a more desirable alternative to laying off 13 teachers, but some staff — including principals, cafeteria and custodial workers — would lose their jobs.
She acknowledged that working families would have a hard time finding child care on Fridays.
Rebecca Barten, mother of a child in kindergarten in the district, said parents who attended the board meeting weren’t allowed to address the panel before the vote. “I wanted to hear about all the possible scenarios, not just what was said,” she said.

Challenges of a class teacher
TEACHER TALK WITH MALIKA VASUGI 22/02/2009
Much of a teacher’s time, energy and emotions go into the seemingly mundane job of managing a class.
I HAVE always thought that the most significant but understated portfolio among school staff is that of the class teacher. But then, of course every one who holds any portfolio in school tends to think that his/hers is the most important task, with the most responsibility, and that others with different duties have it good compared to them.
